March 10, 20188 yr Hi all New to unraid so i thought ide get some build advice. My main use will be a Plex server and local storage. will be some trans coding through plex. i use apple tv on my main tv mostly and then a couple of WiFi devices. only ever 1-3 streams tops. my parts list : https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/8nCLD2 unsure is 8gb of ram is enough or if i need to go to 16gb? looking at the seasonic power supply for the fanless mode and going 650w to keep in fanless mode. would 550w be ok? will start of with 8tb usable then upgrade as my needs require it. I looked at going with the Pentium g4600 but am unsure if it has the trans coding ability for my needs all my files are 1080p at this stage. my apple tv is 4k but its up scaling them. obviously would save quite alot going g4600. any thoughts would be really appreciated.
March 12, 20188 yr Hello and welcome. 8GB is probably enough, but I'd almost always recommend putting 16GB into a new machine if you can. You could almost certainly get away with a 550w power supply in a mini-ITX build, I'd run a PS calculator. Regarding CPU choices, the 4600 is a Kaby Lake 1151 CPU and the 8100 is a Coffee Lake 1151 CPU - so keep in mind that even though they use the same socket they'll need different motherboards. Regarding transcoding, if you really plan to support 3 transcoded streams the Pentium G4600 (5133 Passmarks) wouldn't be enough unless you also plan to use hardware transcoding. The rule of thumb is 2,000 Passmarks per 1080p stream, and don't forget to leave some capacity for unRAID itself. The Core i3-8100 is a better choice (8094 Passmarks) if you plan to support several transcoded streams. This is an inexact science, though - the source material, the capabilities of your players, and whether you are using hardware transcoding all affect transcoding.
