Data Move - NAS4Free --> Unraid but want to reuse drives

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

just got my UnRaid up and running in Trial mode with 2* 6TB WD RED

Now I want to migrate my data.

Current Config is RAID5

4x 2TB WD RED

2x 2TB Samsung Green

with Parity --> 10 TB of data

I want to reuse my 4*2TB WD Reds

So my train of thought was:

  1. Assign the 6TB Reds to the array with no parity
  2. Copy 10TB data to UnRaid (no prob since 12 TB are available)
  3. Check Data
  4. Put 4*2TB WD Red into UnRaid Server
  5. Assign 6TB Red to Parity

First of all, is this even possible to assign a data drive to a parity drive?

What would be the steps in UnRaid ?

Thx for your answers :) appreciate it!

Kind regards

Tschuki

Tools - New Config is where you go to change disk assignments as you are talking about.

Do you have backups? Hate for you to discover after you have unRAID reformat your old disks that something went missing.

Also, since you are talking about putting data on a disk and then later using that disk as parity, you will of course have to copy that data to other disks before reassigning it as parity. You seem to have left that out between step 4 and 5.

Thank you for your quick response.

Nope no backups.

The main issue I have is reassigning a data drive to parity.

The data should be redistributed to the added 4*2TB WD Reds before this happens (of course)

Is there a way to verify this ?

Thats exactly the step I was talking about.

I kind of think, that when I add the 4*2TB Reds the data will be distributed between all 6 drives (2* 6TB + 4* 2TB)

No there is no redistribution. You may have some invalid assumptions since you are coming from RAID. unRAID is NOT RAID. Each disk is an independent filesystem. I recommend you take a look at the introductory material on the Limetech homepage, which you can get to by clicking their logo at top left of any forum page.
