having trouble identifying which USB controller is getting passed thru

Featured Replies

I've created a new Windows 10 VM, using my iGPU video and audio passed thru.  All this seems to work fine so far.  I also have selected

ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1042A USB 3.0 Host Controller | USB controller (0a:00.0)

to be passed thru to this VM also (checked the box on the edit screen), as I want to be able to plug in my phone and sync music directly at the server, not over wifi (speed).

I've tried plugging my phone and my keyboard to all the USB ports on the machine, but none triggered windows to install a driver, or acknowledge their existence.

How do I figure out which ports I should be using, then get them working?

One way: "brute force" take a USB device and plug it into USB port X, does it show up? No, then unplug and plug into the next port. Repeat until identified. Don't forget about the internal USB headers on your motherboard, it could be one of them too.  At least you know it should be one of the USB3.0 ports.

thanks.  I kinda tried that with my keyboard, but windows never recognized it.

Eventually, I used my phone (same idea) and figured out which ports got passed thru.  Working great.

Sadly, I was hoping that by doing it this way, I'd get faster transfer speeds to my phone, but it's not as fast as I'd hoped.  Getting around 8-9MB/s now, vs 4-5 before, so better, but was hoping for closer to USB3 and my card's speeds.  Oh well, probably my phone is the bottleneck now.

Do you have a different USB cable just to double-check that's not part of your speed issue? (couldn't hurt)

yes, good idea.  I have many to test out.
