Disk error

Hi all,

 

2 Days ago I've upgraded my unRAID server from v5.0 to 6.

Now I needed to select all the disks again in random order, because I didn't knew that the array was empty after the upgrade.

 

At one disk, I now get "Unmountable: No file system" and at FS, "auto".

 

How do I get access again to this disk?

I've already ran 

xfs_repair -v /dev/sdf

But got the next message: 

 

Phase 1 - find and verify superblock...

bad primary superblock - bad magic number !!!

 

attempting to find secondary superblock...

(and repeats)

 

What do I need to do now.

Is the disk corrupted by upgrading to v6.0?

Is it the syslog.txt that you need?

I cannot check the disk.

I cannot find where to enter the commands, after I click on "Disk 5" in the Main menu...

I simply can't find the text saying: Not available or Check Filesystem Status

 

I don't get the wiki..

 

Maybe because unRAID cannot find the right filesystem?

Keep in mind that reiserfs is not recommended any more, so the first major thing I would plan on doing is freeing up 3TB of space somehow to empty one of your current drives, or add another drive, so that you have enough room to migrate to XFS. You can't convert in place, you must copy from your reiserfs drives to freshly formatted XFS drives, but you can do it one drive at a time in the array. There is a long sticky thread about it.

 

Also, personally I wouldn't keep that seagate in use,  except as an offline backup. That specific disk model is so bad, it has its own wiki about drive failures. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ST3000DM001

 

With both those thoughts in mind, I would purchase 2 8TB drives, replace parity with the first one, then replace disk1 with the other 8TB. Copy the contents of disk2 and disk3 to the new 8TB disk1, format disk2 and 3 to XFS, copy disk4 and disk5 to disk2 and disk3, format 4 and 5, copy 6 and 7 back to 4 and 5, format 6 and 7, copy disk1 to 6,7, and the remainder spread across 2,3,4, and 5, then format disk1 to xfs, and have 8TB of free space for new files.

 

If you have the physical slots available you could use the old 3TB parity as a data drive if you wish, but like I said, I wouldn't trust that drive long term. You could also put the old disk1 back as a freshly formatted XFS drive for more room during the conversion if you want, but long term I'd want to get rid of the smaller drives in favor of fewer larger drives.

 

If you decide to migrate off of reiserfs to XFS, start a new post with your step by step plan and we'll help you do it the safest and most efficient way possible.

The array is now running smooth.

 

Although, for me, 8TB disks are too expensive, so can I achieve your replacements and switch to XFS with 6TB disks?

Sure, all you need is enough free space to empty your largest drive. Do you have the physical space and SATA ports to add more drives? What I proposed with the 8TB drives is probably the most efficient (quickest/safe) way to accomplish the migration without needing more drive connections, but it's hardly the only way to get it done. 8tB gives you space to empty 2 drives at once, almost doubling your conversion speed. 6TB added to the array instead of replacing an existing drive would accomplish the same thing, but you need another drive connection.

 

Are you sure the price / TB is higher for 8TB than 6TB? The cost per drive is higher, but the cost per space gained should be close, if not better. Given that you only have 2TB free right now, you probably need more space anyway, so why not give yourself a little breathing room?

 

Do you have the SATA port and physical space to handle another drive?

I have the physical space and enough SATA ports to add another 3 drives, and maybe more.

Here at my place the price per GB is at 6TB disks €0.028 for WD Blue, and per GB at 8TB disks €0.029 for WD Red...

So it is indeed a very close call.

But with 2x a 6TB disk is +- €340 and 2x 8TB is +- €450.

So that's a huge difference for me, as it difference 110 euros for 2 disks.

You then need to factor in the cost of the electricity per TB per year and 8TB drives will instantly have an advantage - especially 8TB helium drives that saves a lot on their power consumption.

 

Another thing is that the economical lifetime is in general longer for a 8TB drive than a 6TB drive - when you run out of free SATA ports and need more disk space it's the smallest drives you will have to throw away first. Or you'll have to buy an additional SATA controller card.

The thing is, not everyone can afford the most economical solution. It's a sad irony that a lot of people have to suffer at different levels in different parts of the world. In this example, the cost of electricity is spread over a year while the purchase of new disks is an immediate expense.

Of course. But it's important to realize that the total lifetime cost doesn't just depend on $/TB for the purchase price.
