I tried replacing an old 200gb ata hdd with a 500gb WD sata drive, as soon as i start the array to let the drive rebuild from parity my server hangs, i can't refresh neither can i telnet to the server. Would it be safe to restart the server using the reset button?

That would seem to be your only choice if you cannot telnet to the server.

i used my backup of my flashdrive i've made earlier today to try again without succes. So i connected my new 500gb drive to my e-sata connector on the outside of my computer using an E-SATA to SATA cable. This time it is working and the drive is being rebuild as we speak. It must've been a bad sata controller slot then.

Or a bad/loose connection.
