Dell R720 E5-2609 V1

Featured Replies

HI all,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my unraid server from my old desktop (i7-2600k, 16GB, 2x GTX 560) with a more efficient and purpose built rig that I can hopefully setup with GPU passthrough to a Windows VM for gaming, something my current chipset doesn't support. I currently have my eyes on a Dell R720 with 2x E5-2609 V1 CPU @ 2.4GHz and a H310 controller, which from what I gather is required to make it work with unraid. I'm not 100% sure that I'll get lower power consumption, but I'm thinking this will almost certainly be a better CPU:watt ratio.

My question is, according to the E5-2609 V1 data sheet it supports VT-x and VT-d, but does not support Turbo boost or Hyper-threading. If my understanding is correct, this will allow me to run GPU passthrough.

Also if anyone has any experience running a GPU (probably just the GTX560s to begin with) in a R720 any pointers would be much appreciated.

Tom
