I could not find any concrete info on this for unraid. Can I use symbolic links in a unraid user share or will it cause problems?

    Yes, you can use them. No, they won't cause problems. They work within and between user shares and are correctly handled by the mover. I use relative symlinks (ones that don't begin with a /) a lot. If you browse folders that contain symlinks in the unRAID web GUI they are followed, so you see the files to which they point.
