Windows VMs won't shutdown is user logged in?

Featured Replies

Anyone else have this problem.  I often remote into my Windows VMs and leave the sessions logged in but disconnected.  Anytime this is the case the VM will not shutdown without doing a force shutdown.  This prevents me from taking proper backups of these VMs.

Anyone know of a way to remedy this?

I know that if I'm disconnected from one of my servers, but still logged in - it requires me to acknowledge that I want to force a reboot/shutdown. Metal or VM doesn't make a difference.  Short of logging out or forcing a log out via policy, I don't know how to get around it.

Yes this is the behavior I'm seeing.  But that doesn't help me when I'm doing automatic backups at night/early morning.  I need a way to force the VM off automatically without any user intervention.

What about setting the VMs to Hibernate instead of shutdown? (Settings - VM settings)   (assuming they're windows, you'll also have to install the virtio tools for windows)

Doesn't that only applying to host shutdown?

From the VM drop down you do have the option to hibernate them.

If its all automatic, then adjust your script to hibernate, or alternatively investigate via Google on what's going on and how to solve it on the Windows end.
