HP N40L died...now what?

Hey guys, my N40L has been going strong for a number of years but just died.  I think its the PS (amber light plus red HP logo are lit up). 

 

So, the question is, should I try to replace the PS or just get a new machine?  If new machine, what would be a good small form factor replacement?  Maybe a HP gen8....bc I can upgrade its CPU to a XEON.  But, truth be told, I don't need much power.  No need for transcoding...just streaming and maybe a Docker app or two.

 

Any opinions greatly appreciated!

I never got on with the Gen8 - it's not very power efficient, and it's kind of noisy.

 

There is the Gen10 Microserver, which is another AMD SOC machine like the N40L.  It's fine if you're not running VMs or expecting blistering performance, and it's relatively cheap.

 

You could also go for an Intel-based QNAP NAS and run unRAID on that - they work very well and are super-low powered and quite fast.

My N36L died, ended up being the PSU... I jerry-rigged a full size one and got it working again lol

 

Normal replacement PSUs are available on ebay

Hmm I would say if you really don't need the power hungry machines just replace PSU. I actually recently replace my N40L with a much more powerful build as N40 is ancient now, the difference in even browsing the unRAID GUI is incredible. 

 

Wouldn't bother with new Gen Microservers unless you can get them in the uber cheap deals that come around. If you pay retail say £350 for Gen10, I paid £150 more and got a Xeon CPU build which is at least 5 x more powerful than the slow Gen 10.

Hi, I am running the same server and have been since 2012. Earlier this year, my PSU died as well and ended up replacing it with a refurbished one. It's been running great ever since, but the AMD Athlon II is not up to snuff for running VM's and now I am torn about replacing this little bogger that's been running strong for a long time.

Are you by chance still running your Micro server? And how does it perform with running VM's on it.

Mine was only ever a Kodi appliance with some file storage setup, nothing heavy.

its retired at the moment but plan on reusing as a backup server.

 

I wouldn’t expect much performance-wise for VMs.

I got in a replacement harddrive and no go....didn't boot (red light HP logo).

 

Ok, guess I'm on to a new server solution.
