here is what my Qnap has for specs:

Qnap TVS-1271U-RP

CPU i3-4150 3.5ghz dual core 4 threads

24 gigs of ram

dual channel support

12 3tb drives -i'm not sure but i want to look into 4TB drives and get rid of the WD drives and go Seagate

2 samsung SSD 850 256Gig  cache drives

Sorry internal cache ports are two KINGSTON SMS200S3240G 608ABBF0

now here is my question:

Can i get rid of the QNAP software and use something more useful like UNRAID? Do i have to use it as a flash drive or can i install it on the DOM? if i can only run USB can i some how wipe the DOM so never to boot QNAP agian if i choose so down the road?

Thanks everyone, i'm a newbuhere.

If replacing drives, you should consider moving to larger drives. Look at 6 or 8 GB drives and instead use fewer drives, leaving the remaining slots for later.

There are no reason to touch/change the DOM. Just unplug it so you may return back to QTS anytime.

Add a valid USB stick and hard test unRAID would run as expect / normal, then another issue should be how to transfer data from 3TBx12 to new disk/unRAID.
