August 17, 201015 yr Just installed Windows 7 this weekend and I can't get it to find my server. I tried to follow the directions below from another thread. I couldn't even find those settings. Typed secpol.msc into run and it wasn't found. Apparently it's not in the Home Premium version of 7. What should I try next? Thanks. On my main Windows 7 machine I adjusted a few settings and got it working. I tried setting only the 1 item which I figure was the key item on another machine and it worked. It deals with NTLM encryption levels either 128bit required or allow for 40/56bit. Control Panel - Administrative Tools -- Local Security Policy {secpol.msc} Security Settings - Local Policies -- Security Options --- Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients ---- Uncheck "Require 128-bit encryption" --- Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers ---- Uncheck "Require 128-bit encryption"
August 17, 201015 yr I'm using several Win 7 clients and didn't have to change any security settings on them to get them to see the UnRAID server. First, are you using DHCP to assign an IP address to the server or did you statically assign it? Can you ping the server IP from any other machine on the network? How are your systems connected? I assume the server is hardwired, how about the client(s), are they wired or wireless? It may be as simple as your router isn't resolving the name "Tower", in which case you can just add an entry to your local hosts file.
August 17, 201015 yr Author Windows XP and XBMC (hardwired and wireless) can find the server fine. I can access the Web GUI from the Windows 7 machine via //tower Everything is hardwired with router and gigabit switch. Using DHCP. When I go to "network" on windows explorer, all I see is the Windows 7 machine. I turned off the firewall, turned on all sharing and network discovery options. I don't see the other computers, the router, nothing.
August 17, 201015 yr Are they in the same "workgroup" ?? (or whatever Win-7 calls it) It sounds like the win7 box is in a different workgroup. Joe L.
August 17, 201015 yr Google Windows or domain master browser. Sounds very much like a master browser issue... It's a pain in the a**
August 17, 201015 yr Author Just realized I could type "\\tower" in windows explorer and get to the server. Nothing shows up in network though. Oh well. I'll look into the domain master browser. At least I can get to my files in the meantime.
August 18, 201015 yr Set your server as the Master Browser (select 'yes' on the settings page), and make sure that all your machines are in the same Workgroup (which is under control panel>system on Win7, not in the Network and Sharing settings where it should rightfully belong).
August 18, 201015 yr I found W7 seems a little slower finding the server for whatever reason. Once it does, it seems to be OK finding it again though. XP would basically "pause" as it searched the network but W7 will show the network and then update it as it finds things. I do have the Master Browser option checked on my server. You can right click on the window and select Refresh too. Peter
