May 21, 20188 yr I'm helping a friend build a new unRAID machine that they want to run a Windows 10 VM on. While they have old laptops lying around that they could use as guests to access the Windows VM running on unRAID, they primarily want to access and use the Windows VM directly from the new unRAID system they are building. Their CPU and motherboard will have onboard graphics, which I understand is really only for the unRAID OS, so they would need to passthrough a second GPU that their monitor could be connected to. They are building a pretty high end system as far as CPU, RAM, and SSD (for cache drive and VMs) go, but a second GPU wasn't on the list yet. The Windows VM wouldn't be for gaming, so I am wondering how important the specs are for this second GPU that would be for the monitor displaying the Windows VM? Can they get away with a very low end GPU for very little money? Or would that end up degrading the overall performance of this new high end system they are building?
May 23, 20188 yr Author Perhaps another idea, can I put the cheapest possible GPU in a PCIe slot and have this as the graphics for unRAID and the onboard intel graphics for the VM?
May 23, 20188 yr Get something like a GT 1030 for your VM and leave the Intel iGPU for unRAID. Lot less headaches in the end.Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
May 23, 20188 yr I would suggest a passiv cooled GTX 1050. Low heat, low power (you dont even need extra power cables), and low price. If you dont do any Games, GPU doesnt matter. (but i have a 1050 as second GPU for transcoding 4k -> HD, while streaming) ~80% GPU
May 23, 20188 yr AMD 5450 / 6450. Dirt cheap. Passthrough to windows VM no trouble. And for audio if you don't have an HDMI monitor a usb dongle (
