IMG file size limit?

Featured Replies

unRaid OS: v6.5.0

VM OS: Win10 Ent x64 v1803

OS (1st virtual drive) runs on cache drive

2nd virtual drive runs on one 3TB physical drive with 778GB free.

2nd virtual drive partition type: GPT

A second IMG file was added to an existing VM with a size of 2TB. After adding about 900GB and rebooting the the VM, the drive did not appear in Windows Explorer. Checking Disk Management the 2nd virtual drive was still mounted but now appears as an empty unformatted device. I added it to another VM to confirm this.

Is there a file size limitation to IMG files? I am retesting with a 1TB IMG file and about 600GB of data now. I will report back my results.

I seem to remember having a similar issue with IMG files above 1.5TB about 2 years ago (unRaid v6.1.9).

Thanks.

Do you have 2TB available on a single drive?  Is the image being created on that drive.

The 2TB IMG is on one 3TB physical drive. And that drive shows 778GB free.

Possible I'm mistaken, but at least the first vdisk passed through to Windows is sparse.  It takes up so much space and then grows as needed to the maximum size you've specified.

If you only have ~778GB free on the disk the image is on, then once the image grows to fill the space you're probably going to see exactly what you are seeing.  Without the image on the disk, you need to have 2+TB free.

778GB free AFTER the 2TB file. It's the only file on the 3TB physical drive.

Creating a 1TB IMG file, on a 3TB physical drive, and putting about 600GB on it worked perfectly. Even after multiple reboots and streaming data.
