Copying data from a usb HDD plugged into the unraid server machine

Featured Replies

Is is possible to plug in a normal external USB HDD into the raid server, then copy everything from that USB HDD to one of the unraid shares??

I've got a backup of over 300gb of TV shows on a usb HDD which i want to copy over, so before i plug it into my PC then do it accross the network i wondered if its possible plugged directly to the server.

Thanks

It is very possible. If you have unMENU installed (who doesn't?!) you can go to the disks page(cant remember correct name) and mount the external there. It will be assigned a share so you can now ssh/telnet into the server and copy internally using midnight commander or command line.

Keep in mind that the USB hard drive needs to be a standard format such as NTFS to work. XFS wont work etc.

Ah well thats at least a step in the right direction... i now know its possible :)

I haven't as yet installed unMENU but it is on my todo list, currently got around 90min worth of data copying over so will do it then (as i understand it needs a reboot).

the external HDD is NTFS so that would also be fine.

Can I ask what Midnight commander is?? I'm afraid i'm very much a Windows Boy and have very limited linux type commandline experience.

"GNU Midnight Commander is a visual file manager, licensed under GNU General Public License and therefore qualifies as Free Software. It's a feature rich full-screen text mode application that allows you to copy, move and delete files and whole directory trees, search for files and run commands in the subshell. Internal viewer and editor are included."

Got it sorted in the end so all done :)

Put myself a new gigabit switch in today too which has helped copy speeds from the main PC HDD.

Think i'll look at that Snap thing too - looks very useful for the sharing aspect
