examples of cheap builds?

Featured Replies

Can you guys help with putting together some example builds based on currently widely available components, for a total of, say, $500 or less?

My main needs are:

- compatibility and stability with UnRaid

- number of SATA ports

- fast interface (not PCI)

- ease of swapping hard drives (don't need hotswap cages, to save costs, but could use side-facing hard drives for example)

does 2GB of RAM make much of a difference?

Only if you are going to be running addon's (airvideo, PS3 Media Server, Java, etc) then it would be a good idea to have at least 2GB of RAM.  Otherwise it is not really needed for most things.

Airvideo, is that the same as the iPhone app? I use that on my Windows machine. It's available on UnRaid?

There is an airvideo server install for Linux that I managed to get running (with a lot of help from JoeL. and a few others) under unMenu.  Check out the thread in the Customization forum.

EDIT: if you are planning on running Airvideo Server a more beefy CPU and more RAM would go a long way in helping it run.

What would be a more powerful alternative to the Sempron 140 for the CPU?

But then I could serve videos thru my always-on Windows PC like I do now anyways.

I have an AMD Athlon II X2 245 in my server.
