Finally moving to a rackmount setup

Featured Replies

I picked up a pretty decent deal in my mind on a dual xeon supermicro system to replace my N40L which is used for storage only and a second small factor machine which runs docker and all the containers which writes back over the network instead of directly.

So now the plan is to move all my drives in to new case but at same time upgrade the parity drive to a WD RED 6TB freeing up the current 4TB WD Red to go into the array.

So first question really is the best method to do this? Should I just put all the drive where they need to be and create a new config with the 6TB assigned to Parity?

Will also need to figure out how to move my appdata to the new setup CA Back up tools and restore I am hoping. Will need to remap all my network mounts as plex etc all use mounts created using UD plugin.

Planning to do this Saturday so need to make sure I have covered all bases.

I would get the new enclosure up and running using the same configuration initially, just to be sure there aren’t any problems with the new hardware.

Once you’re sure everything is good you can shutdown the server, pull the old parity drive, install the new one, boot and assign the new drive as parity. After the parity check completes you can add the old parity drive to the array.

Not sure that any of this will effect appdata. As long as you don’t change the cache drive (or whichever drive contains appdata if it’s not cache) then your appdata should be good to go.

Thanks for the reply,

Going to move everything over as is for now and get it up and running, then move appdata which is on a separate system. Hoping I can just import it to new setup and all I have to do is update the mounts.

Also want to check the power consumption compared to old systems too, I am hoping it will be more efficient as I have 3 machines running 24/7 where now I can have 1 single machine, and run my windows desktop as a VM.

Does anyone know how to get the best use out of dual cpu setup with plex or will it just do what it needs to automatically?
