Worth trying to build around? xeon 5660 x2

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I was given a few Xeon 5660 processors from a friend the other day and 128gb of memory he told me he salvaged from an old server.  Just curious if this is worth trying to build around.  It's a little older so I wasn't sure if it was worth spending time looking for parts for the rest of a build.

Thanks in advance.

Well the cpu is dirt cheap :) but there are a lot of dual socket motherboards out there that fit it. So you could just grab a second one and a motherboard an build a decent system.

i have dual 5640s and 96GB of Ram and my server seems to be running fine.

it really depends on how much you would pay for a second 5660 and a dual socket motherboard

Note that that second 5660 is already available:

The 5660 draws a bit of power, but is well worth it when received for free. Especially when considering the RAM price for building new systems.

Thanks, guys, I have multiple processors so that's not an issue and a tonne of match ECC 1333 ram.

Any other suggestions for boards, I'm not seeing a lot available for sale in canada.

Thanks again!
