Setup for a virtual Server and Clients

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my UnRaid to use it as a VM Server for several purposes. While on it, I would like to remove my workstation and introduce a slim client to work on the server. However I'm not certian if the experience would be as "smooth" as on the Workstaion - which is quite essential for me. I'm hoping to get some hints in regards of choosing the appropriate hardware and software.

Here is what I would like to put into the Server:

  • i9 7900X
  • 1TB SSD for the VM OS Images, etc as a cache prefered drive (probably mirrored)
  • Some GTX1070
  • An X299 asus WS borad
  • 64 GB memory

I run a Plex Docker on the server and several other App, which are probably negatable.

For the VM's which are essential:

#1 Win 10Pro with 4~8 Cores. I use Visual Studio and other "heavy" Applications, like an SQL Server, etc. This is the main Machine, which needs to run as a replacement for my current workstation.  (GBit Lan)

#2 Some Browser VM, just to do Internet stuff, but It should be able to stream youtube, etc... Any recommendations? I'd like to reset it after using.(GBit Lan)

#3 Plex Client - As I do run some 4k Content, I'd like to use another VM to output Plex Streaming whithout the need of a "powerfull" Client... Any recommendations? (5ghz WiFi)

Regarding the Slim Clients... I have no idea what to use and how to setup them up for a smooth usage... I was thinking about PI3?...

Could you provide some input and give me an idea if this is possible..? Thank you!

Just a thought on your ‘slim client’ what sort of screen resolution are you expecting?   A Raspberry Pi 3 might struggle with screen resolutions that are more than 1080p (1920 x 1080) unless you are prepared to put up with low refresh rates on the monitor.   An alternative might be to run appropriate cabling (HDMI and USB)from the unRAID server  to where you want you ‘workstation’.  Doing that would allow for much higher screen resolutions as it would be running directly of a GPU.

I'd rather invest a little more into the slim clients. I'm running a 2.5k scrren, which I'm planning to exetend with another one. As for the Streaming, most screens are 1080p now, but Upgrades are pending. So a Pi 3 seems not the right client... any other suggestions? maybe a NUC? or a custom build?

Which OS shall I ran on the client and how to connect to the VM's? RDP, Horizon...?
