astro
I'm looking for a HBA with 16i ports. Motherboard ( ASUS Dual Scalable Xeon WS C621E SAGE EEB Workstation Motherboard) CPU X2 ( Intel 8 Core Xeon Silver 4110 2.1GHz) RAM 64GB Case (logic-case, Product Code/SKU: SC-4824, 4U Server Case w/ 24x 3.5" Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays, 6Gb/s MiniSAS) So I'm looking for a HBA with 16 ports as MB already has 10 and case has 24 disks slots. The server main thing is Plex so will not be writing lots off small files but will be streaming 4K movies. I've looked at the support list and there are not many 16 port one on there and when I've looked to buy most come up with end of life so not able to buy a new and most seem very old models so was not sure if they would be best option to go with. I have a HighPoint RR2840A 16 Port PCIe SATA/SAS Raid Card already in the machine but this one is a new card and not working with UNraid at the moment. But would like to reuse cables if possible with new card. Any more information required please let me know. This was all got to be a freeNAS server and all worked in freeNAS but the VM in freeNAS is not that good as I'm planning on making a gaming VM my main PC from here later on. If I can get it to work as I'm new to UNraid. Thanks for any help you can give me. Edited August 9, 2018 by astro Quote Link to comment

Frank1940
Read here for LSI controller families that you can use to look for 16 port controllers. Remember that they have to be flashed to the IT mode. I don't believe that the 9201 -16i has a problem with transfer speed for spinners. SSD's, quite possibly-- However, I seem to recall that 9201 based boards do not support TRIM. Most folks are using the eight port models as they are readily available on the used market (E-bay) for very reasonable prices. https://lime-technology.com/forums/topic/69018-sata-controller-replacement-question-and-advice/?tab=comments#comment-630097 Quote Link to comment

Vr2Io
Does the case test/used ? If use mainboard SATA connect to case blackplane, HDD LED may not show the activity. SAS expander also a good choice. Edited August 9, 2018 by Benson Quote Link to comment
