What is the best usb 3.0 controller to use with windows 10 and osx as VM? ?

 

If I buy this card:

Can I passthrough one of the usb port for OSX and one for Windows 10? Since this is card has 4 dedicated channels? Hopfully they will have one IOMMU group each?

 in my MacOS/Windows 10 VM and it works great. I don't think you can assign individual ports to a VM though. I just pass through the whole card and it works great with plug and play USB devices. 

 

I also have a GTX 1060 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1267099-REG/GeForce_GTX_1060_SC_GAMING_Graphics_Card as my graphics card passed through to my Mac and Windows VM's and it works great for me other than I can't get the HDMI sound to work from MacOS. But I just bought some USB speakers that solved that problem for me. 

Did you ever find out if that star tech card worked with OS X? I’m looking for a discrete 4x channel usb card. Allegro usb 3.0 looked like it fit the bill but is sadly discontinued.

Not the best choice in my opinion; it should have the Renesas/NEC chipset, it could work with the GenericUSBXHCI.kext

If you want a pci usb card that works out of the box in osx go for any Fresco FL1100 chipset, such as the Inateck cards.

I'm not sure the Inateck KT5001 listed above by @Doberbane will fully work, because the card has two chipsets, the Fresco FL1100 and the VLI chipset.

I'm currently using the 4 usb ports Inateck KT4006 which works very well in osx (and obviously on windows 10), without any external drivers nor kexts.

Inateck KT4001 is also ok, it has 4 external ports and internal power connector.

Thanks, I have a few of the inateck cards but I'm intrigued by the cards with multiple controllers. These allow individual ports be passed to different vms, wasting only one slot in the process. 

 

I think the sonnet allegro is the one, just not clear if the newer 3.1 version works well...
