Graphics issues

Featured Replies

I've set up a server with 2x geforce 550TI cars running a windows 8.1 VM (exported from vbox image) with one card and ubuntu 18.10 (fresh install) VM with the other.

So far I've not had much luck, ubuntu freezes constantly and the graphics are poor in windows. (idea was to be able to game, but that is no better than vbox currently).

Ubuntu:

Every 15 minutes to a couple hours ubuntu will die. Seems like X crashes, mouse is still working for a while and sound / video works as I can hear it playing but picture is frozen. I can SSH to the machine from another machine at this point.

Once it dies I have to reboot the physical machine as the display never works after a VM reboot.

I've tried all sorts of combinations, with vbios, without. Using ubuntu drivers, using nvidia drivers. But so far there is no stability. Using vbios (that I dumped) with the nvidia drivers wont even boot at all.

Windows:

I can see the card detected in device manager but the graphics are off, the certain fonts or sizes are kinda pixelated but images with font are perfectly clear???  (picture attached showing the difference). Device manager says the latest drivers are installed and claims everything is working fine.

When I try and run a game from steam I get "Failed to create d3d device". Searching the web tells me I need to update drivers and windows.

I try an install the latest nvidia drivers from the web and they refuse to work. No specific error just a generic "no compatible hardware was found".

For some reason I can not install some windows updates. From some searching online I get redirected some how to "trouble shoot networking", and I think its some joke, because I am using the internet. But out of desperation I try and I get an error. "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings". Device manager lists this as "Red Hat VirtIO Eth" so I figure its related?

Tried a new combination last night, no vbios on the card and proprietary nividia drivers in ubuntu and its not crashed now for at least 12 hours.

Still not had any luck getting windows to run any games / graphics related software.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks
