Spin down drives questions, regarding noise

Featured Replies

If I have the free version of unraid, and currently have 6 drives attached. 3 of them are currently in the unraid array, but the others are attached and not the in the array due to the 3 drive limit.

If I spin down the drives will all 6 spin down, or just the 3 that are in the array?

Is there anyway to reduce the noise of the hard drives?

Clicking the spindown button in the unRAID main menu will spin down the 3 array drives.  You can install unMenu and from the disk managment page you can spin down disks that aren't in the array.

Different drives may have SMART settings that might change the drives  acoustic preferences.  I've never experimented with doing this.

The awesomeness of the system is all your drives spin down and only what you need spins up when its needed. I have 6 drives in a box behind me and I can't even hear a thing. Now and then I hear the CPU fan, but even then its pretty silent.
