Steps for Proper Clean Install (migrating to new box)

Featured Replies

My unRaid USB key has been in use since before v4.7. Its gone through several different hardware setups, HBAs etc. With the new PC I am building, I want to start fresh with no extraneous folder/files. What is the recommended method for achieving clean install goodness? I have a fairly uncomplicated setup with 3 dockers, bunch of plug-ins (including CA). Dual parity for a total of 13 disks.

I have created a new key (soon with trial license) for testing the new box (not quite there yet tho... moving kind of slow on the build).

questions I can think of right now...

1. should I replace my USB key? Its the original from the beginning (SanDisk Cruzer Micro U3) created 10/25/2010.

2. in making the clean USB key, what do I need to bring over from the old to retain disk config, dockers & plug-ins (and all their settings)?

Does anyone have some input?

All of your settings are in the config folder.

Not sure quite what your objective is?  First, you said you wanted a clean install.  Then you wanted to bring over Dockers and plugins.  (Normally, most of us would not consider a 'clean' install to include these.)

Here is a list of the files and directories with descriptions that are found on the USB drive:

Best advice I would give you at this time is to make a complete copy/backup of everything that is on the current USB Flash Drive before you begin.

About replacing the USB drive---  I personally would wait to even consider this until you have the new server up and running.  (The old one-thing -at-a-time adage...) If you decide to do it, get a quality drive. That is one manufactured by a well know memory maker, less than 32GB, and USB2 if possible.  (USB3 boot operations will occasionally cause problems with some MB/BIOS combinations. This may not be an issue in the future but why chance it if you can avoid it.)

How are you defining extraneous? If you keep all of your configuration, it could indeed have some extraneous things in it, such as docker templates you are no longer using. But they won't be used, they are just files sitting there taking up a small amount of space on your flash.

And if you keep all the data on array and cache, there is likely to be extraneous things there as well, such as appdata for dockers you are no longer using. Those won't be used either, but depending on the docker, it might take significant space (depending on your definition of significant). And there will obviously be files on the array that may or not be extraneous.

Maybe the reason you even asked these questions is because you think the unRAID OS has gotten cluttered like Windows might. The unRAID OS itself is unpacked fresh from the archives on flash at each boot, then your settings are applied. You could think of it as a clean install every boot.

What I meant to end up with was less clutter. I understand there is no performance benefit. It's just a housekeeping thing.
