file operations unstable with new array

I'm starting a new three disk array and started the parity sync, which went up to around 50 MB/s. I tried to copy files to a share and the operation seems like it simply freezes. I try a few times and occassionally the transfer works, with adequate speed, but mostly it doesn't work. The parity sync would drop down to 10-15 MB/s after a transfer attempt and then goes back to 50 MB/s after several minutes. Is it normal to be unable to access the array during parity sync?

 

The syslog below is from a telnet session and the server is still running.
