Significant drop in CPU utilization

Featured Replies

I just completed a migration of five 1 & 2 TB disks onto a single 8TB drive and went from 12 data disks down to 8.

I just noticed (after the parity rebuild) that my CPU utilization seems to be running about 5-10% now, where it had often been around 50% (and sometimes quite a bit higher) previously. Memory usage is about 25% (of 24GB) where it had been running in the neighborhood of around 50%. I've also noticed that my Kodi box is suddenly a lot more responsive when I'm navigating through directories and files (it was fine when navigating its library) than it was before. I used to get a 20-30 pause when dropping into a subdirectory, even one with < 10 files in it, now it's opening the new directory listing almost immediately.

I'm running all the same dockers and plugins that I had before. I've got cache_dirs running with the exact same settings that it had before.

Do additional drives create an additional memory & CPU load? If not, what might explain the very noticeable drop? I've not removed any files, everything was simply copied from the old disks to the new one, then the old drives removed from the system.

Of course, I'm not complaining about CPU utilization dropping, more headroom is always better than less, but it's an odd thing that I just noticed this evening when I got home (the parity rebuild finished earlier this afternoon) and I'd like to have some clue as to why.

I would be very surprised if the drop is related to the removed disks.

I was too, @johnnie.black, that's why I asked!

This morning, I've got some disk writes going on and utilization seems a bit more normal, bouncing between about 5% and 50%. Maybe I just caught it napping yesterday with basically nothing going on. With Emby, radarr & sonarr, I would have thought that it would keep the CPU reasonably busy at most times - I must have just found a real lull.
