Best way to test new RAM for stability?

Featured Replies

Hi all! I’m finally upgrading my server from 4GB (ouch) to 16GB of RAM. The 4GB sticks have been rock solid. And I’m hoping my new 16GB sticks will have the same or better stability. What’s the recommended way to test new RAM?

Preferably I’d like to test it in UnRAID to minimize server downtime. Thanks!

The Unraid boot menu includes a memtest option.  Install the RAM in your server and run the memtest.  Your server will not be available during this time, of course.  The recommendation is to run it 24-48 hours if you really want to thoroughly test the RAM. A shorter test may give you confidence that there are no obvious issues with the new RAM sticks.

Ok I’ll run memtest for at least 24 hrs. Thanks!

UPDATE: so the memtest is not running as I expected. The test ran fine for about 15 mins, showed no errors, and then the screen went blank with some visual artifacts on the left side. Anyone experience this?

UPDATE 2: So I ran a series of memtests in this fashion to diagnose the problem:

  1. Ran memtest with my old 4GB (2x2GB) sticks. It completed one pass without error.
  2. Ran memtest with one module (8GB) of the new RAM. It completed one pass without error.
  3. Ran memtest with the other 8GB module of the new RAM. It completed one pass without error.
  4. Currently running memtest with both 8GB modules. Will update if it completes one pass without error.

UPDATE 3: Memtest completed 1 pass with no errors with both 8GB modules.

This is peculiar...hmm. The only difference between this test and the first one was I left my PC case open (since I kept changing out the RAM sticks). Could it have been an overheating issue that caused the black screen?

I will keep letting it run for he next 24 hrs.

If your fans are set up correctly, running open case would normally result in higher temps unless you had a house fan blowing directly inside.

Your scenario sounds more like a bad connection that was solved by reseating the DIMM.

Oh right that’s the only other change between the first and later tests. Well memtest is still going strong with no errors. I’ll continue to let it run for the rest of the day.
