September 22, 20187 yr Hello, I feel like I'm going crazy after looking at so many mainboards.... ~_~ I want to upgrade my existing server. It should be at least on par with an DiskStation DS918+ (J3455). I want to ran a few dockers (Sonarr/Radarr/Sabnzbd) an want play around with light VM. It would be nice to have 6 SATA ports (on board or through PCIe). Since ran into some troubles with my current build I want something reliable. The whole system should be running rock solid and I'm willing to spend a little bit more to achieve this...
September 23, 20187 yr Is the mini-itx a hard requirement? this can severely limit your choices, as mini-itx comes with only 1 PCIEx16 slot. and usually the cases won't let you install more than 3 drives. or have any hot-swap bays. (there are some choices that allow many drives, internal and external...) Just for reference I am using a mini ITX case, using a Pentium G4620. I am using the AsRock Z270M-ITX/AC, which does have six sata ports, but I would like to have much more, so I splurged on a LSI -9206-16e which allows me to attach 16 SAS/SATA drives directly and a ARC-4036 8bay SAS/SATA hot-swap enclosure with an expander, so I can theoretically connect another few enclosures against what I have for a lot of drives - all JBOD. There are some cases - like Silverstone DS380 which gives you eight hotswap bays and enough space for a mini-itx and a 2/4-port SATA hba/controller ( the full feature LSI HBA like mine won't fit in the DS380, without sacrificing a drive bay )
September 23, 20187 yr Author MiniITX is kind of a must, since I already have a Fractal Define R2 mini and it can fit 6 drives, which is enough for me. I was thinking about: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/J4105B-ITX/index.de.asp and a LSI SAS Controller.
