There is no way to recover encrypted data when the key is lost. Make always sure there is (a copy of) the key stored in a safe place.

A copy of the key file or copy of the pass?

The encryption key can be either a passphrase or a keyfile.

The passphrase is something the user has to memorize or store somewhere.

The keyfile can be text or binary content, and must be stored in a safe place.

Upon startup the passphrase or keyfile is locally copied to /root/keyfile and this file is used to unlock the actual encryption/decryption key of LUKS
