September 10, 201015 yr I am contemplating getting a pair of the new Seagate FreeAgent 3TB drives, breaking out the bare drives and installing them in my unRAID 4.5.6 server. The question is: Will unRAID 4.5.6+ be able to read/write to these drives, and to future larger capacity drives, such as 4TB drives on the horizon?
September 11, 201015 yr Author Hmm. Well, it appears that unRAID with 3TB internal drives won't be happening any time soon I'm afraid. My unRAID has is about to max out its 8+1 2TB drives so there is no point in waiting any further for larger capacity drives. Another 2TB has to be ordered and added...
September 11, 201015 yr There is no internal 3TB drive available. Any attempted use to extract the 3TB drive out of that external enclosure is strictly on bleeding edge experimental territory. That goes for normal Linux and normal Win OS systems. It remains to be seen what functionality is on the enclosure controller board and what is on the drive's controller board. It's highly probable that once the drive is removed from the enclosure's controller board it won't work connected directly to a SATA port.
