Yes, as long as you're not going to use the cache for much else, like unpacking large rars, etc.

Right! Thanks again👊

SMR will never be faster than PMR, and for some uses, mostly if you do a lot of random writes it might be slower, so given the choice and since they cost the same avoid, if you already own an SMR drive than go ahead and use it.

Assuming they cost the same, I agree.  That's not what I have found so far.  Not to mention, if I was that worried about speed I would be using a system that is designed for speed rather than an inexpensive, all-purpose, easy to use, easy to expand, low maintenance system.

I can write 2TB of new data a month and not notice the speed difference. I'm not going to sweat the difference (measured in at most 10's of minutes over the course of a day, minutes that I'm not even present to witness) in how long it may or may not take "mover" to move my latest data to the place where it ends up. Perhaps if I was using this in an enterprise environment, I would.  But for home use, I think the worry is completely wasted.

It is for 2.5" disks, which is what the OP was buying, e.g.:

PMR: https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HDWL120XZSTA-Laptop-Internal-Height/dp/B07CT5RDDX/

SMR: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barracuda-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST2000LM015/dp/B01LX13P71

SMR: https://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-1TB-Hard-Drive/dp/B079BQS5WQ/

They all cost about the same, so buying PMR is a no-brainer.

Different story for 3.5" in the past, though not so much now, but I do have an SMR only server with 8TB Seagate Archives disks, and they perform great for my use case, but if at the time I could get 8TB PMR for the same price, I would, since SMR has no advantages except when they are cheaper.
