September 12, 201015 yr I'm curious if anyone has installed the SpiderOak software on an unRaid box for offline/cloud backup and syncing. I'm considering it for duplicating my core personal files, and to get a sync'd version on my laptop for when I'm away from home. The software for spideroak is supposed to run on slackware, but requires a GUI (X, I think) for the initial install. Any brave souls out there already try and succeed or fail?
September 12, 201015 yr I went through part of what you're considering a few months back. Long story/short, I ended up using CrashPlan. It provides a lot more options and is a lot cheaper when backing up the amount of data that most anyone who's running unRAID would be considering. It works well for me though there are a few features of SpiderOak I wish I had. What specific things are you trying to do and what features are most important to you? For example, Is browsing your backed up files from another computer more important than getting the lowest cost/highest capacity offsite backup solution? If you lay out the features and prioritize them for yourself, it may be easier to give you some advice that's useful. There are a lot of people on this forum with different priorities who have setup different solutions - and they all work.
September 12, 201015 yr Author In my case, I'm dissolving my physical office with four employees. We each need to access a common set of folders on a server, but not simultaneously. We're working with 10-30MB CAD files so having a cloud copy with sync to the individual local machines would be as ideal as I can get without a dedicated VPN and a fortune in access fees. I've tried Hamachi but it's horrifically slow over a 768DSL uplink, and inconsistent on my W7x64 machine. AutoCAD is one of the world's least tolerant apps to network hiccups, so a local copy is almost a must. I thought it would be great to make a new share on my unRaid, but it doesn't appear that SpiderOak can sync a mapped drive from my windows machine, so I'd have to make the unRaid box sync. I only have about 40-50GB of data that needs syncing, and it's growing at less than 15GB/yr. I don't need more than 4-5 years of active files, so I'd never exceed the base level of service. Most of my unRaid is movies which I own on disc, so backup of that to the cloud isn't really necessary. If I can't, it's no big deal - I'll just put the actual files on my desktop, and make a second syncback job to the unRaid for my local first level backup. I'm just used to everything being on my unRaid server, and I hate to change something that already works. ;-)
September 12, 201015 yr Your requirements are completely different than mine. Unfortunately I haven't explored solutions with those requirements in mind (namely the ability to sync across multiple machines). Hopefully someone here will be able to respond with some experience. Good luck. When you get this figured out, be sure to let us know what you work out and how it performs.
September 12, 201015 yr Author Thanks. If I end up going the linux native client mode under unRaid, I'll be sure to post back what I've done for the next brave soul.
January 21, 201313 yr Bouncing this to the top as I'm looking at a very similar situation. I'm trying to sync a < 1GB folder from UnRAID between a few PCs with one being remote (internet access). I've been going over the various options and SpiderOak seems to have the features I want. Here are reasons for not choosing the alternatives: DropBox - security(?) CrashPlan - slow sync (once a day max for the free plan) Google Drive - sync issues using a mapped drive, no Linux client Tahoe-LAFS - no free option (also confusing) SugarSync - not sure yet, still reading ... So is anyone doing anything like this? Have you tried or do you use SugarOak? Any suggestions? Do you have a guide or link that helped you, I had an account with them spread over 3 laptops before I fell for unraid, however as we all know unraid is not backuo (unless you have another system). I already pay for space i might as well use it. thanks
