what good is creating other users than root?

Featured Replies

I have been running with root as the only user for 6 years.  Today I created a new user using the Users->Add user tab in the GUI.  I tried logging into this user account using PUTTY from my PC but it just closes the window.  I tried logging using the "terminal" tab in the GUI and it only logs in as root.  I logged in as root and did "su hunter" but when I issue "whoami" it says root. So it clearly did not create a Linux user.  So my question is:  what does the User tab (add user) actually do and why would I want to do it?

Thanks.

So that you can restrict access to shares to specific users.

To elaborate, all access from the command prompt (and to the webUI) is always via the root user.  unRaid's user system is not "users" the way that a vanilla linux install thinks of them.
