taalas
Hi, i am currently looking for an upgrade to my existing unraid setup (mostly WD Red and older Seagate 2/3TB drives). I was thinking about upgrading the parity drive to either a 5 or 6 TB drive to then be able to add bigger data drives in the future. I have been quite happy with the WD Reds, would it make sense to get a faster drive as parity though? Are there any drives that I should look out for especially? 5400 vs 7200 RPM? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks Edited November 5, 2018 by taalas parity, not cache drive Quote Link to comment

Jcloud
Just as an FYI, I updated my parity from a WD Blue drive to a WD Gold drive; I saw my parity checks go down in, "time taken to check." I don't have exact numbers anymore (forgot), but I want to say Blue drive would take roughly 14 hours, and Gold drive takes roughly 12.5 hours (I'll have to run again and check, but it is less than blue). Oh, and for scale, my parity is 4TB. Edited November 5, 2018 by Jcloud Quote Link to comment
whipdancer
Generally speaking, a faster drive will allow for more speed. Beyond that, I think you will find that everyone has a horror story about a given brand of drive. I shop on price and will be waiting for the black friday deals to come out. I expect find a few good hard drive deals. 1 Quote Link to comment
