DirecTV Media Share

Featured Replies

Has anyone been able to connect their Unraid system directly to their DirecTV receiver to view files using the DirecTV Media Share application? My main goal is to be able to stream .MKV files to the DirecTV receiver. It seems like most people use Tversity for this function, but the application is only available for Windows. Seems kind of pointless to go from unraid --> windows --> directv. I'd like to cut out the middle main and go directly from unraid --> directv.

I was never able to get it going.  Tried PS3MS, Twonky and MediaTomb and there is probably another one in there I am missing.  Neither worked out of the box and I spent a few days fooling around with device settings and transcoding scripts/settings and nothing worked as good as Tversity on a PC.  I basically got frustrated and gave up.  The problem is that the DTV media share of course supports limited codecs ie no MKV containers.  It was only for my bedroom setup and for all the time I put into it I could have got a Roku or WD Live for like 80-90 bucks and had it running out of the box along with other apps.

TVersity has said for a while now they are looking at Linux ports lets hope it is sooner rather than later.

Good luck and let us know if you find something that works.

Thanks for the info and sorry that you had to go through all of that to no avail. I have actually considered getting a WD TV Live for the living room and my bedroom...I wouldn't have to transcode that way since the box will play .MKV natively and they are ridiculously cheap for what they can do. I was hoping to have one less device connected, but it may just be the best way to go for now. Perhaps that's the best solution until Tversity releases a Linux port.

Thanks again for the comments

Wow freaky I just got a WD TV Live Plus HD....  to play videos from my unraid for my bedroom.  Works great so far - plays 1080p Mkv fine on a 32in 720p LCD. I havent put it through the ringer but so far so good.  Definitely easier than anything I have done in the past (Orig. Xbox Mod, PS3 + PS3MS, Appletv Hack, HTPC with CrystalHD Card).  I may bring it back to Best Buy when the Boxee gets released but I am liking it so far.

Funny you should mention the XBOX =) I still haven't gotten around to getting a WD Live, so I dug out the old XBOX that was sitting in a cabinet and spent yesterday hacking into it and installing XBOX Media Center. Other than the fact that it's connected my TV using composite video and stereo audio plugs, the PS3 Media Server software is streaming all my MKVs to it perfectly right now. It will do until I get around to getting the WD Live. Now that I have a Netflix streaming account, I want to get the more expensive model with the streaming. Sure would be nice if they had a gigabit ethernet connection though.
