"Unknown PCI header type" error

Hello, I keep having this problem, where I have a VM set up and working fine, then I do a restart on my server for an unrelated reason and when I go to start up the VM again I get an Unknown PCI Header type 127 error, then my entire server becomes unresponsive, I'm not sure whats causing this, I even tried completely deleting the Vdisk and starting with a blank VM. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!

 

I currently have a USB controller, GTX 1080 Ti and a Sound card passed through to the VM.

Hi there!  Need to further isolate where the issue is coming from.  First and foremost, you mention that the issue occurs when you reboot the entire server.  What happens if you reboot just the VM or shut down the VM and start it up again?  Any issue there or is it only when the entire host has to be reset?

 

Another test would be to remove all PCI devices you've assigned from the VM and reboot.  If no issue, try adding back the PCI devices one at a time, repeating the reboot test each time.  This will then narrow it down to the specific PCI device causing the issue.

 

Lastly, while doing these tests, it would be helpful if you tailed your system log so that any last second errors get recording to a screen.  You can tail your log through an SSH session (use either Putty or the built-in terminal in the Unraid webGui) and type this command:

 

tail /var/log/syslog -f

 

Then if the server ever gets into that hung state, just take a screenshot of that log and post it here.

Thanks for the quick reply jonp, here are the diagnostic logs compiled right after a crash, however I wasn't SSH'd into the device to get the sys log, and when I was and went to recreate the problem the VM started right up and seems to be stable! it's like taking my car to the shop and they can't hear the noise I've been hearing for weeks. I will keep a continuous sys log going on my personal Mac through terminal and hopefully catch the problem sometime tonight when I'm using the VM. And if I do catch the problem I'll try some of the things you mentioned in the pervious post by jonp.
