i have been trying to install windows server 2012r2 standard as a second vm, but the installer keeps crashing on the windows logo. this happens on all versions of windows after windows 7 /server 2008r2.

 

system config:

2x amd opteron 6136 8 core cpu's

2x micron 8GB ecc registered ddr3 memory

 

vm config:

6 cores

6144 MB ram

machine: i440fx-3.0

bios: seabios

hyper v: yes

usb controller: 2.0 (EHCI)

os install iso: server 2012

os install bus : usb

graphics card: rx560

sound card: rx560

Does is work if you don't pass any hardware?

nope, still crashes at the windows logo.

@glitch4 Try the install with only 1 core. For me Win7 VMs hang during initial install if i give the VM more than 1 core. 

tried one core, no luck.

Shot in the dark, but try changing vnc video driver to cirrus and os install iso to sata.

 

Also, it's possible your iso is corrupted or modified, can you try reimaging the original media, or even better download directly from MS and see if it installs ok.

no dice with the driver, and the image is actually from microsoft,  just renamed so i can keep track of it. the regular named version didn't work either.

 

got it to work!!

switched seabios to ovmf

went back to i440fx-2.12

and it works, now installing windows server 2012 r2.

 

Congratulations. If you post the xml of the configuration that works, it might help someone in a similar situation.
