September 18, 201015 yr Hi everybody I just bought a 2T WD EADS hard disk I was just gonna preclear it and add it to the array but, since i have not had a failed disk yet, i decided to put it in the place of a smaller disk in order to try the rebuild function. My question is: do i still need to preclear it first or is this not useful when replacing a new disk? Also, if I preclear it (i know preclearing will also help stressing the disk so i can test for any problems), will i have any problems if i use it afterwards to replace the smaller disk? Thanx in advance

My question is: do i still need to preclear it first or is this not useful when replacing a new disk? When a drive is used to replace an existing drive it is never "cleared" by unRAID, but instead it is entirely written with the old disk's contents. The pre-clear will weed out issues with a drive that cannot be written and re-read properly. It will not eliminate down time as there is very little down-time when replacing an existing drive. Also, if I preclear it (i know preclearing will also help stressing the disk so i can test for any problems), will i have any problems if i use it afterwards to replace the smaller disk? Thanx in advance You'll have no problems at all using it afterwards.
