phat_cow
I plan on building an unraid NAS running a few dockers for plex media server and newsnet stuff like radarr, sabnzbd, sonar. I also like to have a VM to run a game server for Arma 3 but only 2 players will be on it. There will be a maximum of 2 plex streams at any given time (1080p). Is an Intel Xeon E5-1650 v4 overkill? Or should I just go consumer grade hardware? Quote Link to comment
Tybio
If you are doing Plex transcoding, I'd go with a processor that has an intel iGPU for hardware transcoding, if you want the best of both worlds, look at the "E" series Xeons, they are basically i7-8700s with ECC ram and some other goodies that run at lower power (same performance, or better). They do need the C246 chipset, but the cost of those boards is in line with the i7 chipsets. They are very nice boards for home servers, lots of SATA ports on board, M.2 and with Supermicro you can get IPMI :). Look at the E-2174G or E-2176G reviews...there is a good one on anandtech.
