Threadripper with unRAID

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm having some issues with my new Threadripper build using IOMMU with GPU passthrough. I've been doing a lot of reading from both reddit and here, and I know there was a lot of issues with this before, so it is possible I'm missing something.

A little background:

I've been using unRAID for a while on my media server, and recently got a Threadripper 2950X for helping with some side projects at work. I decided I'd play with it using unRAID and dropped my two 1070s GPUs in there (as an excuse to grab a 2080Ti for my main rig). The issue I'm running into, the two 1070s aren't showing up when I check IOMMU. To be sure, I put an older GT 710 GPU in there, and sure enough it showed up.

Setup:

Threadripper 2950X

ASUS Zenith Extreme

64gb DDR4 Vengeance Pro

1TB NVME Samsung 970 EVO

2x 1TB Samsung 960 SSDs

1x WD Blue 1TB HDD

2x ASUS Strix 1070

unRAID Version: 6.6.6 2018-12-01

BIOS: I've tried 1501 and 1601.

HVM and IOMMU is enabled

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could be missing here? All that I see showing up is the old GT 710. Hopefully I'm just being an idiot and I'm missing something obvious. I'm very new to this type of stuff, having only really used unRAID for Plex and basic NAS functions.

Thanks

I think checking bios options should be your first step.  Make sure those slots are set to x16 or x8 and enabled.  Strange for neither one to show in IOMMU groupings.  Have you tried to load another OS to verify that they are working there?  The first thing I did with my threadripper build was install windows 10 with no activation and burned in the machine overnight to verify everything was recognized and working with no thermal issues.  That helps a lot to eliminate hardware issues so you don't have to wonder during your unraid config. I have the acs downstream patch enabled also- I think that may have helped also.

Yeah good call, I did check in the BIOS and confirmed it sees both cards. One card has a warning, but it's just telling me it would be better suited in an x16 slot. I ran lspci via CLI and it shows the 1070s there. I did run Windows 10 on there for maybe 2 weeks while testing thermals, the 1070s worked fine there.

Figured it out thanks to a buddy at work, I missed a setting in the BIOS. IOMMU said it was enabled, but there was a setting missing.

Under Advanced, AMD PBS, there's a setting to enable PCI across both dies.
