Solved - Data Migration to New Unraid Server (Need Help)

Featured Replies

Hi Experts,

I am fairly new when it comes to unraid and use it just for storing my media file (as NAS). I reached limit of 16TB on my existing 10 year old machine so planning to migrate to new server (better CPU, RAM). Below is my current system and I was wondering if anyone can recommend how can i migrate the data.

Existing System - 5 * 4 TB HDD (1 Parity and 4 for Data. Unraid OS is Version: 6.6.5 but Filesystem is still "reiserfs" as I just upgraded the OS and not their File System). It does not have any slot left for adding any more hard drive via SATA although it still has free USB 2.0 slots.

New System - Has lots of additional Slots but as of now, it has only 1 Parity and 1 Data Drive (8 Tb Each). It does not have any data at all. Unraid OS is Version: 6.6.6 and Filesystem is "xfs" (latest).

Requirement - Migrate Data (not over network/ ethernet) but rather locally from 2* 4TB Hard Drives (from old system) to one 8 TB drive (new system).

How can i add 2 older data drives to the new unraid without cleaning their data on old disks, so that i can see all 3 drives (1 new 8 TB data drive, and 2 *  4 TB each data drives) in new system. Once it is done, i can manually use MC or linux commands and copy the files from 4 TB drives to 8 TB drives locally.

I am not sure what will happen if i just add 2 new data drives from old unraid to new unraid. Will it format the old drives ? I dont want to rebuild the old system again btu I am okay for old system to be off as long as i am using its drives in new system for finishing data copy. After that i want to attach them to old system and manually delete the data .

Please help.

Use the Unassigned Devices plugin to mount each drive outside the array. Use MC to copy each disk to array. After a disk is copied, you can add it to the array, let Unraid clear it, then format it as XFS and use it as a destination for copying additional disks.

Thanks. It worked and made my life so easy.
