Open up the Terminal (In the GUI) and type  ping 8.8.8.8   You should get back ping times from that server.  If not, you most likely have a DNS issue.   You can assign the DNS server addresses on the    Settings  >>>  Network Settings   You can use the 'Help' button to display information on the various settings.

MIght just be a browser problem. If you have any adblockers in your browser whitelist your server.

The system has no problems with ping 8.8.8.8 (the apps download works just fine). I have tried 3 different browsers (two of them stock without any plugins)...

How large is your flash drive?

You can do a manual upgrade by simply downloading the latest release and replacing all the bz* files in the top level of flash with those from the download.

The Flashdrive has 32gb so the hardware should not be the problem. I will test the manual upgrade.
