Replacement for Lancool PC-K12B & PC-A17B?

Featured Replies

Hi!

Lime Tech uses these two cases for their "ready to run" systems.

Lian Li's Lancool PC-K12B

Lian Li's PC-A17B

I like the design and would like to built my unRAID-Server using one of these cases. Unfortunately they are both "out of stock". Does anyone know a good replacement for 15 drives?

Bye.

If you use 3-in-5 cages you can use the Coolermaster 590

Hi!

Exactly! That's the plan.

Any comments about this:

Costs a bit more...

Bye.

The biggest question here is what's your budget?

The CM-590 is the best budget-friendly case you will find, and the quality is fantastic considering the price.  Throw in three 5-in-3s at about $100 each and you have the skeleton for a 15 drive server for around $370.  And as you can see, the budget case can still come out looking pretty slick.

If you have a bit more liberal budget, Lian Li makes the best quality cases on the market, but you pay extra for that quality.  The P50 is a great case for an unRAID server, and it would allow you to expand up to a 15 drive system (using three 5-in-3's).  By the way, these SuperMicro units are some of the best 5-in-3's on the market, and they are the same ones used by LimeTech in their MD-1510 server.  Put those items together and you'll end up with a server that looks very similar to one built by LimeTech.  The total here will be around $470 for a 15 drive server.

However, you should also consider the Norco 4220This is what I use.  The Norco 4220 costs $350 and generally comes with a nice free gift (currently a 1 TB hard drive).  That's the total cost, no separate 5-in-3's required.  So that's cheaper than both the 15 drive servers above, but it gives you a 20 drive capacity.  Of course, then you'll end up spending more on the server internals to allow you to actually use all 20 drive bays, but you can space those purchases out over time if you wish.

The biggest downside of the Norco 4220 is noise.  The included fans are LOUD.  However, I replaced my fans with these cheap fans and made a custom fanplate (which was a lot of work, not recommended).  Luckily for you, Norco is releasing a replacement fanplate that will take those 120mm fans and costs only $15.  I believe you can preorder one now (can't find the link at the moment).

The Norco is also quite a bit uglier than the other options, but I've always preferred utility over aesthetics.  Again, it comes down to your budget.

Hi!

Thank you for answer Rajahal. I read the thread about the Nocro. I considered it for a while but I dismissed the idea. Besides the noise I would have to buy a rack to mount the case. Also I couldn't find a reseller here in Germany.

I considered also the Lian Li P80. The case looks quite nice and you can but up to 20 HDs into it. But the price...

After all I decided to buy a 15 bay system. unRAID offers an easy way to replace a smaller disc with a bigger one. Besides I think 26 TB should be enough for my storage demands.

Bye.

You don't have to run the Norco in a rack, I just put mine a table (actually currently in an old entertainment center, since modern TVs make them obsolete).

For a 15 bay server I think the CM-590 or LianLi P50 are the best options.
