Protecting a (backup) drive from viruses/etc

I'm currently working on my backup solution and trying to figure out a good balance between security and convinience. Unplugging a hard disk is what I would consider a 100% secure way to make sure my data isn't modified by a virus/ransomware/etc, but it gets a nice 0% note when it comes down to convinience since I have to manually plug it back in when I want to make another backup.

Is unmounting a disk generally enough to prevent anything bad from happening? What else could I do (besides off site backup)?
