Mac OS X VM with GPU Passthrough - MSI Not Enabled - Poor Performance

Featured Replies

So I have tried both a High Sierra and Mojava VM using SpaceInvaders guide. I passed through my Nvidia GT 710 gpu and have a Headless HDMI emulator plug on it to release it from any dependencies.

For some reason though, terminal in Unraid shows MSI is not enabled. It shows "MSI Enabled -" instead of "MSI Enabled +" for this gpu. It also shows its being used by the VM.

Reason I ask is becasue I noticed I get better performance from onboard video then the GPU I can assign to it. It's very choppy and I get no audio when passing through the 710.

My Windows VM, on the other hand, can get MSI enabled with the MSI tool and resolves any issues for Windows. But alas, their is no such tool for OS X from what I perused on the net.

Any advice?

osx doesn't need/doesn't care about the msi enabled business in my experience.

as far as audio, it's hit and miss. I use to spend hours trying to get mine working with various nvidia cards. Eventually I got smart and just use 10 dollar usb audio adapters.

don't know why you have a  headless plug in it unless you're using it for "remote desktop" services only. which, hate to tell you, is never amazing on osx (its "ok".)

I will tell you this in regards to osx nvidia performance: about a month or so ago, @SpaceInvaderOne and i were running some benchmarks in osx for comparision. I was getting reallly low scores on a 1060. So I asked him to try with a 1080 to see if it was my problem or something else. He was only a few fps higher (we're talking 9fps on the 1060 to 12fps on the 1080 in heaven) I then somehow changed something by moving the disk image and using a using a newer xml (which was really just the same old xml) on the same machine and WHAM, I was getting 55fps+, closer to what it should be on max settings (vs. comparable mac bare metal installs.) I have not yet been able to determine the difference of what was making it perform at 1/5th the possible rate.

Yes, it's strictly for remote sessions. But I was hoping it would at least perform *better* than with on-board graphics. It's actually degraded in performance compared to on-board so I am thinking of just chucking the gpu. But I would hate it if it's something I am just forgetting to tinker with to get it to work right.

try team viewer or if you're local remote, splashscreen. i believe both install a virtual sound card for sound throughput.

as for the gpu performance, no remote software is really that great yet. I've done remote editing of adobe indesign documents on a mojave os running a gt710. it's usable, but you're not streaming any video.

The problem is that with the 710, I am getting hanging and choppiness with just the OS itself. No video was even taken into account. Video is horribly choppy but I was just hoping to use the OS X VM for odd tasks I must have a Mac for. But given that onboard gpu had better performance this $60 I paid for this 710 looks like it was for nothing at this point. Once I have more free time I am going to try and figure it out, but at this point it seems OS X on Unraid may be hit or miss. Don't get me wrong though, Unraid has been a life savor since I moved from Synology.
