Need to upgrade, how does this new setup look?

I'm using the ram, coolmaster case, cables and drives from my old setup.  I have 7 total drives so I'm probably going to use the AOC-SASLP-MV8 for the six data drives and put the parity on it's own internal cable.  Will this setup work fine, see any potential issues?

Thanks for linking the wish list and not making me look up the parts myself.

Everything looks great to me.  No compatibility issues that I can see.

What's your justification for the faster CPU?  Do you plan on running some add-ons?  If not, then I would suggest saving some money and using a Sempron 140 instead.

I want at least a dual-core just in case I need it later.  I might want to do some encoding on the machine and I currently have a dual core so downgrading might be obvious.

Oh, so you already own that CPU?  I agree that the dual core is a better choice for video encoding.

Again, looks good to me.

Never mind, it seems I'll need a new CPU and memory! :-(

Crap, I didn't even think about that. I was thinking that since this machine is five years old I couldn't use my old CPU. This is what I have, will this work in that motherboard?

The cpu you reference here is a socket 939.  The motherboard you reference above (ASUS M4A78L-M) supports AM3/AM2+.  The two are not compatible.

The ram speed won't matter in unRAID but here's an ddr2-800 for the same price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148164

When you say you want to do some encoding do you mean encoding home videos, just ripping DVD's or some type of htpc use like playing movies to your tv?

encoding like dvd/hd down to iPad/iPhone.

Very cpu intensive.  unRAID itself will consume about 3% of a AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7Ghz and the rest is yours to use.  I'm using Handbrake on Win7 to convert my DVD's to iPhone and it runs the quad cpu flat out at 100%.  I had to replace the stock heatsink with a high performance one because it quickly hit 71c.  Handbrake seems to run at a lower priority because I can still use the computer and see no lag, so Handbrake is a polite hog.

And a slightly more recent transcoding benchmark layout (pass 1 and pass 2) which includes the favorite Intel i3 530 cpu as well as more pedestrian dual-core or dual-core with hyperthreading cpus. [ http://www.anandtech.com/show/2901/8 ]

For laughs, the Intel Atom 330's numbers are first pass 12.5, and second pass 3.3.

It should be noted that the recent builds of Handbrake no longer suggest the use of 2 pass encoding, the developers highly suggest the use of quality measure encoding instead of constant bitrate. However, the relative performance levels of the cpus remain the same.

okay, just to clarify that system will work together? I got the right SAS card and cables and unraid will work with that hardware?

My motherboard final shit the bed tonight, wont boot to usb and wont even recognize a keyboard.  Also, the PCI x4 Card will fit in the x16 slot right? ;-)

Motherboard is on the approved list:  http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5642.0

I'm not using the 8port card so I can't answer that, but yes it looks like it will work.  Also, I'm using a sata card in my PCIe x16 slot so I know it will accept adapter cards.

Yep, looks good to me - correct cables, correct card, etc.  The x4 card will fit in the x16 slot.

The little i3 is pretty impressive.

Ordered. On a side note, the SAS card ships from a different location so it's not going to arrive with the rest of my order. :-( Damn you newegg!

So newegg sent me an email that they canceled my AOC-SASLP-MV8  because they didn't have inventory yet their site still says they do. Ugg..so I bought it from Buy.com instead and it was cheaper even with 2nd day shipping.

Weak.  Thanks for the report, good to know.
