hedrinbc
Hey all, I have a now free to me (hand me downs from other upgrades) box setup but wondering is there is value going for a more modern or low power build. Everything is stable but older, I do have a backup motherboard in case of failure but no backup CPU. I know the AMD is "old" and "inefficient" but the measured watts doesn't seem extremely high. Any suggestions for modernizing or should I just run it? _All_ the below is using ~130-~150 Watts at average (spun up, not crunching) usage measured with Kiill-a-watt. CPU: AMD FX 6300 HDs: 4 - Two WD Reds, Intel SSD Cache Drive and a Toshiba Unassigned Drive (Docker, Temp Downloads, Etc.) RAM: 16GB DDR3 Main Apps: Plex (need some transcoding but not too much, mostly directplay), Unifi, Pihole, Ubuntu VM UPS: APC Smart-UPS 1000 XL Networking: 24 Port Switch, Unifi USG, 3 Unifi APs, Vonage, Cable Modem I'd appreciate any thoughts! whipdancer
Why not run it and decide if you need more then? Quote Link to comment
hedrinbc
@whipdancer fair, I guess I'm always interested in a project but not sure if this one has a return on investment. Do you know if your Ryzen (I know you have a lot more disk than me so maybe spun down) idles lower than 100w? Quote Link to comment
whipdancer
I've never measured my setup. The CPU has a TDP of 65, so I would expect it to idle less than 100w. Not definitive by any means, but a reasonable comparison.https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/amd-ryzen-5-2600-review,7.html 1 Quote Link to comment
