September 24, 201015 yr Just built my first unRaid box (coming from ReadyNas's). Is it possible for all the disks/array to appear as one big volume ? Sorry for the dumb question (I did look through the wiki etc) Thanks in advance!

The disks are still individual file systems and no single file can span multiple physical disks but to "windows" it looks like one big volume.

I know I'm hi-jacking my own thread, but to install 'packages' do I need to install uMenu? Thanks for the prompt replies all. And the data would still be protected? Yes. No, you don't need to install unMENU, but the fact that you are asking the question indicates you are not too familiar with downloading and installing packages under Slackware Linux. unMENU makes it much easier for many of the more popular packages. It does nothing you cannot do yourself at the command line. (but with a bit more knowledge) unMENU is a web-server, and a set of web-pages with many utilities, the package manager is just one of them.

Is there a 'how to' somewhere?
September 24, 201015 yr Your quite right, I haven't a clue! Is there a 'how to' somewhere? If you don't have Linux experience, you better rely on tool like unmenu to do the jobs for you, search this forum with keyword "unmenu" for information. However if you really want to DIY, then google is your good friend try to do search with keyword like "slackware package installation" for information from Internet. How to install package basically has nothing to do with unRAID functionalities, it is OS-dependent jobs.

September 24, 201015 yr I have all my disks and any additional disks grouped in the single share, which is convenient as I like to have a single drive mapping, instead of multiple disks grouped into shares. It is a personal preference I guess. I know people who have unraid and categorize their media into different groups of shares, ie: Disk1, 2 and 3 is for a 'Movies' share, Disk 4 and 5 is for a 'TV Shows' share, Disk 6 for a 'MP3s' share, and so forth. The benefit of this is to have multiple split level configurations for these different groupings, giving you a flexible folder structure for these categories. If you have all your disks in a single share, you can only use a single split level setting (if you choose to use split level to keep data on certain disks), therefore you have to obey with a single folder level layout. Hope this helps.
