January 6, 20197 yr My project: Currently I am serving TV and movie files from my Synology DS411slim (4x2TB) with a DX513 (2TB+3TB+3xTB) hooked up. I idiotically ran myself into a wall with the DS411's 16TB volume limit on my DX513 drives and I would need to wipe them to start over with that. I decided that I don't feel like going that route and it's best to go for a more powerful DIY solution since I really want to expand my datahoarding and I want something that can run programs like SABNzbd and Sonarr on its own instead of running them from my RasPi 3. The only thing I might consider running on it besides SAB/Sonarr/etc. would be an old Win2K image I have with some old BBS software installed on it. Items I already have include a Cooler Master ATCS 840 case, 2x10TB EasyStores that I just bought and I am planning to transfer all 5 of the drives from my DX513 over to the new rig. PSU and probably an LSI card will be coming later. Where I need help: I haven't pulled the trigger on the motherboard, CPU, RAM and PSU yet. I'm also looking at adding an LSI SATA card or similar for more drives. My budget for the remaining hardware is maybe 200-250USD (disregarding the add-on card in that budget for now). I mainly need help finalizing a decision on the motherboard, CPU, and RAM. For the motherboard and CPU, I've been looking at SuperMicro X8ST3-F (~75USD) paired with a Xeon E5-1650 (~75USD) because I'm looking at using the 6 cores (I'd probably like to dedicate 1 or 2 cores for the Win2K image) and having the available 8x PCIe slots. I'm open to other examples or suggestions for builds with similar setups to mine. Thanks in advance for any help.
