looking to build a NAS plus a firewall

Featured Replies

I have been looking at several builds centering around running sophos xg home firewall and freenas. I got a quote from server monkey and keep bouncing back and forth about just doing a small box for the firewall and buying a nas like Synology. I ran into this and was hoping someone might clarify why this is better than say proxmox or esxi. Here is a breakdown of the server.

Dell PowerEdge T610 3.5" 8-Port Chassis
2.66 GHz Hex-Core Intel Xeon Processor with 12MB Cache -- X5650
2.66 GHz Hex-Core Intel Xeon Processor with 12MB Cache -- X5650
32GB Memory Upgrade Kit (4x8GB) 2RX4 PC3-10600R
PERC 6/i 256MB BBWC Lvl 0-60 INT RAID
2TB 7.2K RPM SATA 3.5" Dell Hard Drive
2TB 7.2K RPM SATA 3.5" Dell Hard Drive
2TB 7.2K RPM SATA 3.5" Dell Hard Drive
On-Board Dual Port 1GbE LOM
Redundant Dell 870 Watt PSU
Dell Half-Height SATA DVD-ROM Optical Drive Included

It's not better or worse, it's just a different way to solve the problem.

I don't want to run an esxi server (or really anything like that) at home - so I use Unraid.
