Cannot open root device null -- new system help

Featured Replies

Hello! I'm trying to setup unRAID for the first time on a Mac Pro 1,1. I am using a plop boot manager CD to auto boot off of USB. I am able to see the blue Lime Technology screen and start the boot into "Unraid OS", but kernel panic every time. I have tried multiple flash drives for unRAID, and have tested my flash drive on another computer and it is able to boot up. I have also tried every USB port on the computer in case one would work over another for some reason, but am still stuck.

The error message I get is:

Quote

VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6

Please append a correct "root=" boot option;

Attached is a picture of the full error.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

How much RAM does it have?

It has 3GB of RAM and 2 Xeon 5150 processors. Everything appears to be up and running, and I am doing the parity-sync on my drives

OK, there was some suspicion that specific boot problem could be related to very low RAM, but 3GB should be more than enough.

That should be enough RAM to boot and have NAS functionality if that is all you want to do. Dockers and VMs maybe not.

TieDyeGeek, I'm hoping to pick your brain here. I'm also trying to get unRAID to play nice on a MP 1,1. I'm using plop via CD drive and have unRAID loaded onto a USB stick that I've verified on other machines. So far I haven't been able to get anything to work on the MP. When I select USB on the Plop menu, the screen freezes when it reaches the port in which the USB stick is living. I never get to seeing the Lime Tech screen. Any thoughts?
